PERSONALITY:

Zhao Yunlan is the kind of guy who has a 'magnetic' personality. Charming, easy going, ornery and just a little mean, he's got the type of personality that's just attached to satisfy someone but just distant enough to maintain a sort of 'unattainable' appeal. He's said to rarely get close to anyone by Zhu Hong but still manages to have a very loyal team under him at the SID. He's less complicated than he'd like people to think but much more personable than others would like to believe.

The first impression of Zhao Yunlan might leave a person thinking that he's irresponsible. He addresses his team from a slouched position on the office couch. His dress is casual and he isn't above wearing pajamas out in public. He speaks in a way that's almost overfamiliar and doesn't always show up on time. If someone were to look in his apartment, it's a disaster area with barely enough room on the bed for a human to sleep. Nothing about the outward presence of Zhao Yunlan screams 'leader of a special investigations department'.

But Zhao Yunlan is well-respected among his team despite their friendly bickering and badmouthing. The SID interacts like a family and that is the intention behind Zhao Yunlan's leadership approach. He wants his team to feel like equals and find family among each other. They have a difficult job in solving mysteries involving the supernatural and he wants his team to trust each other and rely on each other. Even if he can occasionally act recklessly on his own, he doesn't tolerate the lone wolf approach within his team. They might annoy him, but he's responsible for them and cares about them deeply. He'd gladly put his neck on the line for any of them.

While fully capable of playing dumb to get a leg up, one of Zhao Yunlan's points of strength is his intelligence. The Black Cloaked Envoy and his fellows in the SID all remark that he's a smart and quick-witted man. He's skilled at investigation, interrogation, and deduction, making him a well-respected detective among the higher-ups that know just what his duties entail. He's not afraid of danger and is willing to go to whatever measures necessary to solve a case even at the cost of his own wellbeing.

Unfortunately, this also means he does not fear death. Zhao suffers bodily harm from going up against supernatural beings as a normal human as well as interacting with the Hallows, supernatural artifacts that affect him negatively due to their being embued with dark energy. This lack of concern for his own well-being and general recklessness is a source of stress for both Shen Wei, his best friend/love interest, and his team. This becomes even more frustrating for them as he tends to play off his own suffering with humor. He rarely takes his own pain seriously and disregards other's concerns for him immediately when his own injuries sink the mood of a room.

Zhao Yunlan is also a self-proclaimed dumpster fire when it comes to love and relationships. In the novel, he is an out pansexual and has a pretty long history of relationships and one-night stands with people of all genders. Shen Wei is the first person that we know of that he's grown serious about, though his initial intentions are purely libido-driven due to Shen Wei's beauty. The censoring in the webseries translates his propositioning and attempts at courting into friendship and a desire to have Shen Wei join his team.

Despite his history, he's very loyal and won't sleep around when he's involved with someone. Despite believing he will never find someone he's worthy of, he is still hardnosed about being committed. His loyalty comes out in both love and friendship. He's more than willing to stand up for the Dixingian on his team even at the risk of his position. He is an empathetic man, wishing to help those that deserve it regardless of whether or not they're human. He values the truth and defending that truth steadfastly. He might have a mouth on him, full of sarcasm and insults, but he's got a good heart. There's a marked gentleness at his core that those that are close to him see and appreciate.
